Wow! Much planting! Such wisdom!
Non Non Biyori has proven to be one of the most adorably cute shows in a while, reaching the same levels of sweetness that Kiniro Mosaic and Yuyushiki did in seasons prior. However, while I was perfectly happy with what the series was offering, it was not until this week’s episode that I realized how well-written the show is as a comedy.
Do not get me wrong, the show has indeed been funny and filled with jokes since the very start. But this week’s episode in particular exhibited a higher count of actual fleshed out and thought out jokes than any other episode from any other show this season so far. Unfortunately, it’s hard to talk about just what made these jokes so funny and why they worked as well as they did without simply sitting here explaining and spoiling gags. So I won’t do that, just know that this episode had me laughing a lot.
The episode takes on two separate events linked in such a way that they both focus on our lovely couple of sisters Komari and Natsumi. It’s a bit odd to see another episode focused on Komari since she was one of the major focuses of last week as well, but it works thanks to them both acting as sisters being the bigger aspect of the show. Their dynamic is just wonderful, albeit somewhat cliche, with Komari, the older sister, acting far more like a younger sister due to her height and clumsy nature. It works better than you might expect thanks to the show’s lighthearted nature and style of writing.
While I would have liked to see more of Renge, my favorite character in the series so far, due to her having less of a focus last week, this episode did manage to make me care far more about Natsumi than I had done in the previous two episodes. While I always liked Komari a whole lot, it’s nice that I can now admit to liking all four of the main girls, maybe not on equal levels, but still. It was also nice to meet more of Komari and Natsumi’s family and get to know their mother as well as see a bit more of their brother.
The art-style remains charming and strong as one would expect and while the animation was nothing special this week, some beautiful scenery images and perfectly presented facial expressions did stand out as really notable.
It’s a pretty show to look at, maybe not to the level of some of the higher budgeted shows this season, but as we’ve seen with some of them, good looks is far from everything.
So another episode of Non Non Biyori ended up being the perfect start to the week, let’s hope the week stays good as it moves along as well. This was not only the best episode of this show so far, I can now proudly say that this show is in the running for best show of the season so far with very few shows competing with it.
